Spring is finally here. Though the weather is still a bit unsure of itself, it’s unquestionably the right time to start your garden. Don’t be intimidated by a lack of space, us city dwellers just need to be a bit more creative! Three years ago, I transformed four small planters on my roof deck into a small vegetable garden. I am in awe of what my tiny space can produce – carrots, beets, beans, tomatoes and heads of lettuce big enough to sustain a family of four! My kids help every step of the way – planting, watering, weeding and, best of all, EATING! There is no easier way to get my kids to eat their veggies than by growing them themselves. It’s true, homegrown veggies taste better than anything you can buy in the store.
Here are some simple tips to get started:
1.) Sunlight – Most veggies need at least 6-8 hours of sunlight per day. So find a sunny spot in your yard, deck or window that hugs the sun.
2.) Water – Most veggies are very thirsty. Pick a spot for your garden where it will be easy for you to water regularly.
3.) Soil – Veggies like moist, well-drained soil. Chose soils rich in compost or organic matter to keep them happy.
4.) Choosing varieties – pay close attention to the tag on the plants or seeds you choose. Some plants are ideal for smaller spaces, heat/cold tolerances, and higher yields. Think about your space and pick for success.
Your local garden store can provide lots of information and the tools you need. Or, for an easy start, consider a small, indoor herb garden and enjoy the best basil and cilantro around. Get your hands dirty and dig in!
