6 Ways to Make Healthier Latkes

Fried latkes, along with sufganiyot, are a delicious part of Hanukkah. Food fried or baked in oil is a traditional part of many Hanukkah holiday meals. Oil plays such a significant part in the Hanukkah story that Jewish families have traditionally eaten oily meals for at least 1,000 years. But as we all know, fried food can make over-indulgence much easier around the holidays.

Take a healthier step with our ideas for lighter latkes!

  1. Add other shredded, healthier vegetables into your latkes, like zucchini, carrots, parsnips, or any root vegetables. These veggies have more fiber than white potatoes, so they will fill you up much faster. Here’s a recipe for tri-colored latkes with sweet potatoes and beets.
  2. Skip the deep fry. Pan fry your latkes with a little olive oil and then finish them off in the oven.
  3. Use egg whites as the binding ingredient rather than the whole egg. 2 egg whites is usually the equivalent of 1 egg.
  4. Try natural applesauce. Most applesauce contains a lot of added sugar and even high fructose corn syrup. Natural applesauce is a little more acidic-flavored than regular, but it’s perfect for eating with latkes.
  5. Don’t use full-fat sour cream. Try low-fat, fat-free, or plain Greek yogurt. Greek yogurt has more nutrients and less fat than sour cream.
  6. As always, portion control is one of the best ways to indulge without the guilt. Don’t let one or two latkes turn into six or seven!
