Award Season

Blog post by Beth Waisburd, our health coach.

It’s awards season! As we watch the stars earn accolades for their work on the big screen, we should also think about this year in food. And the winners are:

Best Supporting Spice: Tumeric

This bold spice has been used in holistic medicine for ages. It contains a compound called curcumin which is thought to protect against some cancers and Alzheimer’s disease. It has both anti-inflammatory and anti-septic properties and it helps to improve circulation.

Best Seed: Chia

Some claim that these small seeds are the perfect food. They have more calcium than a serving of milk and the same amount of Omega 3’s as a piece of salmon. They are packed with vitamins, minerals and a healthy dose of fiber to help us feel full.

Best Sweet Treat: Dark Chocolate

Made from the seeds of the tropical cacao tree, dark chocolate contains flavanoids which relax our blood vessels and help to lower blood pressure. Best of all – dark chocolate boosts endorphins and serotonin levels to keep us feeling happy.

Best Protein in a Leading Role: Salmon

High in protein and iron yet low in saturated fat, salmon is a healthier alternative to red meat. Packed with omega 3 fatty acids, just two servings per week will help decrease the chance of heart disease by close to twenty percent.

 Best Forgotten Fruit: Kiwi

Though their small size makes them easily overlooked, kiwis are nutrient dense and potent antioxidants. One kiwi can provide your daily requirement of vitamin C as well as a boost of potassium, fiber, and vitamins A & E.

Best Lunch in the Category of Convenience and Health: Smart Lunches, of course!!

There are many food awards to consider and so many more nominees that have not been mentioned. Bring the red carpet to your home and try them all.
